Big Hero 6
Passion Project
Fall 2020
Project Scope
For a school project, we had the opportunity to do a passion project. After brainstorming multiple ideas, I decided to go with designing a poster for my favourite Disney movie, Big Hero 6. There were no limitations for this project so I had total creative freedom which can be a challenge sometimes but it was also fun.
Purpose & Goal
The purpose of this assignment was to create a project that is unique to me. Since a lot of my classmates have the same school projects as me in their portfolios, it's important to have some unique projects on there as well. This project's purpose was just that and allowed me to be creative to make myself stand out from my peers.
The goal was to create a design that I felt passionate about. Since I love illustrating, I chose to create a movie poster so I could showcase my illustrative skills.
Planning
The first step of this project was to research some inspiration. I found some posters with creative and unique styles that inspired me. I loved the look of a simple, geometric illustration and planned on going in that direction for the poster.
The next step was to find some colour palettes. I planned on setting the illustration in the night time so the colours would be dark shades of blue and purple. I also wanted to have some pop of colour with red and/or turquoise.
Final Sketch
The concept for this poster was to have the heroes standing in the street with the shadows of their civilian forms on the ground. With the help of references, I sketched the concept out in Procreate. I also added the colours that would be used to emphasize their shadows to visualize the idea better. After that, I roughly added the type and QR code to get an idea of the layout.
The next step in the process was to start the final illustration. I wanted a clean, geometric look for this drawing so I needed to create simple coloured shapes. To do so, I used a new layer on top of the sketch to easily start filling in the base colours.
After the colours were all in place, I added some shading, highlights and the background. Once that was complete, all that was left to do was the QR Code and type.
Process
Innovative Twist
To add an innovative twist to this project, I decided to create a custom QR code online. This would allow people to scan the poster if they saw it and they would be easily brought to the Big Hero 6 page on Disney's website. On the website, they could find out where to watch the movie and more. This is a simple and unique way to add an innovative twist to a poster and it makes the information easier to access.
Final Design
Once I added the type and the QR code, the final poster was complete. The illustration ended up being more of a sunset scene rather than a nighttime one. Although, I still used dark blues for the buildings and ground liked planned. Also, the bright colours of the characters add an eye-catching pop of colour. Overall, it turned out close to how I envisioned it and I'm happy with the results!
Benefits
The benefit of this poster is the efficiency of the QR code. By drawing people in with the eye-catching design and making it easy to access the website by scanning it, more people will visit the site. Overall, this poster will increase the amount of people who visit the site which will then increase the sales and/or views.
